Sing Well shortlisted for finals of National Lottery People's Projects!

30 March 2019

Sing Well is a Brighton based small charity that has been selected as one of five finalists for The People’s Projects to compete for £50,000 of funding to improve the lives of people in their local area. We are the only local project to be selected. Working in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council, we provide singing and music groups in Brighton and Hove, creating opportunities for people to sing and make music together. Our weekly groups provide a space for people to explore their voices, express themselves, connect and have fun.

“We are honoured to be selected as one of five finalists for the People’s Projects. There is a lot of evidence about the power of music and singing to transform people’s lives. If we are successful we will be able to expand, run more groups and reach more people. This will have a very positive impact on our community as a whole”

Annie Whittingham, Founder and Director of Sing Well

The groups are free and are aimed at promoting happier and healthier communities, primarily for vulnerable people due to age or a long-term health condition.  We are also committed to breaking down social barriers and wherever possible we make our singing groups open to all.

Our ethos is that everyone can sing, we are passionate about the power of music to improve health and to make people happy and healthier in their community. "Coming to the group is the highlight of my week - I really look forward to it and wouldn't miss it for anything” June, “Since coming to the group my breathing has really improved and I sleep better” Anna

If successful in being awarded this funding we will be able to expand, by running more singing and music groups in the local area and providing group tailored to the needs of people impacted by specific health issues, such as dementia, mental health challenges, Parkinson’s Disease, Cancer, COPD. We also aim to set up a mentoring project to mentor singers in our groups to run their own groups.

Two of our groups, so full of confidence in their ability to sing and give others enjoyment from their singing are working toward spreading their joy by singing in local care and nursing homes.
